The musical director and chief conductor of the orchestra, Tom Cohen (37), has a unique ability to make North African music accessible to musicians with a Western classical background and vice versa. In our orchestra the darbuka, the kanun, the oud and the ney meet a particularly flexible string instrument section and a Broadway-style brass section and a groovy rhythm section. Maqams and rhythms from the Arab world and the Mediterranean meet Western harmonies and modern rhythm organization. The musical language of the orchestra is based on the new musical language developed over the years that interlinks musical methods from the East and the West into a harmonious coherent and organic language.
